Schuurman And Smith Win Features - Western Speedway

By Ken Keating

Western Speedway hosted the second Wednesday Night Fever event with the Steve Copp Construction sponsored Hornet Series this evening and again it proved to be very competitive. Five Trophy Dashes, twelve Heat races, and two Feature events filled the nights program with very close racing.

Laura-Ashley Grant and Richard Chuck had great nights as both racers won the Dash events and two Heat races apiece in their respective races. Garret Smith, Paris Smith, and Chris Davis were the other Trophy Dash winners while Karl Parker, Rory Smith, driving for Steve Copp, Rhett Smith, and Cam Stanfield won the Expert Heat races with Devin Fourneir, Chris Davis, and Glenn Rand winning two of his Heat races in the Rookie Division.

Cassandra Musfelt returned to Bumblebee racing and shared the front row with Ken Plante for the start of the Rookies Feature event scheduled for twenty-five laps. She quickly got the advantage followed by Ian Walker while several drivers battled for the next positions behind them. On lap five, Laura-Ashley Grant finally got through traffic and took over the third spot and then moved to second two laps later dropping Walker to third. Two cars got into the side of Cole Schuurman going into turn one forcing him sideways but he was able to hold on and only losing a couple of spots. As Laura-Ashley was going for the lead on the outside, Glenn Rand went to the inside and took the second spot away on lap eleven dropping Ashley Grant back to third. Rand moved to the outside of Musfelt for the lead and made the pass complete on lap fourteen while behind the new leader, things were still hot for the next positions between, Musfelt, Grant, and Schuurman. On lap eighteen, Schuurman took over the second spot dropping Musfelt back to third while Jay Young moved into contention taking the fourth spot. Over the next few laps the frontrunners made it interesting exchanging the lead back and forth. On the very last lap, Schuurman grabbed the lead and went on to the win followed by Rand, Young, Chris Davis, and Brenda Leslie rounding out the top five positions in a great race. Brenda Leslie was the top finishing Bumblebee on the night.

Matt Schultz and Rocky Sandhu brought twelve cars to the green flag for the start of the Experts Feature event with Schultz leading the first lap and losing that to Richard Shuck on lap two. Several drivers were trading positions behind him until Graham Schuurman took the second spot on lap five and followed by Garrett Smith one lap later.

These three drivers were in a tight battle until Schuurman took the lead on lap thirteen while Smith moved to second dropping Shuck back to third one lap later. On lap seventeen, Ryan Smith moved up to the third spot while Cam Stanfield also got into the mix two laps later. Over the next several laps the top four drivers ran bumper to bumper weaving through traffic but always on each others tail. On lap thirty, the very last lap, Smith won a drag race and took the chequered flag for the win followed by Schuurman, Stanfield, Rhett Smith and Shuck rounding out the top five positions. This race was also highly contested and came down to the last few feet to decide a winner much like the Rookie Division.

The next race in the Steve Copp Construction sponsored Hornet Series is scheduled for July 6th. The next Saturday race will feature the I.M.S. 4 Mini Stocks, the WilRoc Lites, and the highly competitive Stock Car Series on July 2nd.
