Australia are netball world champions
The dream of winning the World Championship crown will have to wait another four years for New Zealand after being tripped up 58 goals to 57 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

It was a night that ended in heart ache and shattered dreams for the Silver Ferns, who were pushed to extra time by Finalist opponent and arch rival, Australia, in the Mission Foods World Netball Championships 2011 Singapore. The crowd was fierce; cheering, stamping, chanting, creating as much support as possible for the Finalist teams.

The first half of the game saw New Zealand dominate; they owned both possession and the score sheet. With a six goal deficit after thirty minutes, the Australian Diamonds needed to change tact and fast if they were going to defend the title they won four years ago in New Zealand. Tactical genius, Norma Plummer, made the required changes at the break and that was all the Australian team needed to reel the Silver Ferns back in.

Possession was key in this tense Grand Final; from the first whistle it was evident that both teams were not giving up the accolade without a fight. Confident, agile and attacking, the fourteen players that graced the court were sensational. The game was either team's to be won. Australian Wing Defence, Mo'onia Gerrard, was creating havoc around the circle edge for New Zealand, never easing to allow the opposition in. Elsewhere on the court, Irene Van Dyk's experience was evident. Playing her 126th game for New Zealand she held her space magnificently and shot under intense pressure. Her team had their chances during regulation time but couldn't shake the Australians off, and after sixty minutes the teams had locked up at 46 goals apiece.

At extra time, 23-year old Australian Goal Shooter, Caitlin Bassett, joined forces with Goal Attack and Player of the Match, Natalie Medhurst, to produce another lethal combination. Their movement in the circle was phenomenal, their shooting precise. After fourteen nerve-wracking minutes and numerous missed opportunities to take the lead by both sides, the Australian attack knew they had to increase the pressure. Flying around the edge of the circle the ball eventually found its way to Natalie Medhurst, who managed to accurately position the ball to score the winning shot in the very last few seconds. The Australian fans broke in to an almighty cheer as the Diamonds won the title and made their country proud.

Australian Captain, Natalie Von Bertouch, said, "To look back at the Commonwealth Games and to lose that in such dramatic circumstances, was absolutely heartbreaking. We didn't shy away from that and and addressed things that we did in those games to help us step across the line in this one. We made all those minutes count and tried to reduce all those silly little errors that we made in the Commonwealth Games and it certainly paid off."

The Australians were crowned Champions and walked off with the gold medal but elsewhere in the competition, England claimed the bronze medal back from Jamaica for the first time since 1999 as they confidently dealt to the strong-willed sunshine girls in the third and fourth place Play Offs this afternoon.

A strong opening quarter from England set them in good stead for the highly contested match as they continued to push forward and extend their lead until the final whistle.

Controlled, quick and intelligent on attack, the midcourt combination of Tamsin Greenway, Karen Atkinson and Jade Clarke fed holding shooter Jo Harten with precise accuracy. Harten returned the favour by shooting 51 from 61 at 84%. Elsewhere in defence, Geva Mentor rose to the challenge of marking both Romelda Aiken and Jhaniele Fowler, getting up to every ball and ruining Jamaica's long, high ball game plan. England won all three quarter, storming ahead to claim a well-deserved win.

England Captain, Karen Atkinson, said, "We really wanted to prove that we're better than playing for the third and fourth place position, and we did that in the last three quarters. We started to take the lead out but we're disappointed that we didn't get to play off for the Gold, as we felt that we played some good Netball these championships but yesterday just wasn't good enough."

For Jamaica it was a sad end to their journey as they started the tournament in fine form. Althea Byfield, who played two quarters for Jamaica pulled off some spectacular intercepts, but at times left her player open as she went for the hunt and her effort alone wasn't enough to claim the third spot.

The Championships has seen some some magnificent displays of athleticism and courage amongst the players. South Africa must not go home without a special mention as one of the most improved team's of the tournament. Despite walking away without a medal, they surpassed Malawi on court this morning to take the fifth spot and Centre, Erin Burger, was named Player of the Championship, proving they are definitely a team to fear come Sydney 2015. Aussie netballers are world champs | Maria Tutaia, Laura Geitz, Catherine Cox, Irene Van Dyk, Temepara George, World Netball Championships 2011

AUSTRALIA has captured a 10th world netball crown with a thrilling 58-57 come-from behind victory in overtime against New Zealand in Singapore.

Rivals from their first match-up back in 1938, the Diamonds defeated the Silver Ferns for the 61st time as they took possession of the most prized piece of silverware in their game.

The tears flowed as the Diamonds weathered a defensive storm from New Zealand to defend their world crown.

It was Australia's 61st victory in 103 encounters with the Silver Ferns and one of their finest moments with the Diamonds coming from six goals down to claim their victory in overtime.

Again the brilliant shooting of youngster Caitlin Bassett turned the tide for Australia with the 23-year-old also shooting the winning goal in her first world championship final.

"Every time we play each other its history writing netball between the Ferns and Australia," coach Norma Plummer said.

"Its just fantastic competition and its what you want to coach to be honest, regardless of whether you win or lose.

"Theres a lot of elation but there can be so heartaches but youve got to take those as they come."

Australia advanced into the final with a 82-46 humiliation of Jamaica while New Zealand booked their berth with a closer 49-34 victory over England.

Australia and New Zealand will play a rematch of the final in Perth on October 23 with two others Tests planned for Adelaide (October 26) and Melbourne (October 30).

Australia will also host England prior to the series in Newcastle (October 9), Canberra (October 12) and Sydney (October 16).

In an earlier game, England retained its ranking of world No.3 with a clinical performance against a disapointing Jamaica.

The woeful performance of ace shooter Romelda Aiken against Australia in the semi-finals cost Jamaica a shot at the world title with the side losing yesterday's bronze-medal decider 70-49. Read More

Australia Win Netball World Championships 2011
Silver Ferns Vs Australia, World Netball Championships final 2011, Singapore

DEFENDING champions Australia kept their world crown when they edged out New Zealand 58-57 in a nail-biting final of the Mission Foods World Netball Championship 2011 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

In another chapter between the game’s greatest rivals, the match went into overtime after the Diamonds clawed their way back to tie up the game 46-46 at the end of regular time.

Young shooter Caitlin Bassett was the hero for the Australians, slotting a goal in the dying seconds to steal the win.

The teams went goal for goal in the extra period, which is 7 minutes each way, and were locked at 52-52 when they changed ends.

Silver Ferns shooter Maria Tutaia had the chance to win but missed her goal and Bassett made no mistake down the other end.

After trailing for much of the game, Bassett slotted 2 goals in the final minute to bring her side back to level and then missed another in the dying seconds which would have given the Diamonds victory.

It was sweet revenge for the Diamonds after losing the Commonwealth Games gold medal to the Silver Ferns last year in Delhi in double overtime.

The win gave the defending champions their tenth world title, after winning the 2007 crown in Auckland over the Kiwis.

Trailing 26-20 at half-time the introduction of young sharp-shooter Bassett proved the difference for the Australians.

They went on a unchallenged run of 5 goals to get within a point before New Zealand coach Ruth Aitken called time out.

Heading into the final 23-year-old Bassett, who only had 5 Test caps prior to the tournament, was shooting 100 % through five games according to official statistics, although she believed she had one miss.

The 192cm Bassett replaced Catherine Cox and her extra height gave the Australians a better target against the physical defence of Silver Ferns skipper Casey Williams.

New Zealand led until the 39th minute, when Australia briefly stole a 30-29 lead, before the Kiwis again hit the front and was up 36-35 at three-quarter-time.

It looked like the Silver Ferns would take the title before Bassett’s late flourish.

Veteran shooter Irene van Dyk was pivotal in the first half for the Kiwis.

Van Dyk, 39, shot 100 per cent in the opening half, with 17 goals from 17 attempts to help set up the 6 goal lead at the main break.

But she was kept quiet in the second half, as the Aussies forced their way back into the match. Read More

Girlfriend Minka Kelly celebrates milestone with Derek Jeter 3,000 hits
Minka Kelly couldn’t stay out of the spotlight. Not this time. Not with 3,000 on the line.

The Hollywood actress was in a suite at Yankees Stadium, alongside Jeter’s immediate family, for Saturday’s Yankees game against Tampa Bay. And she, like everyone else, was caught up in the moment when Jeter slugged a 3-2 curveball over the left field fence for hit No. 3,000.

Although Jeter is fiercely private with the media about his social life, he and Kelly are in a steady relationship. It’s been widely reported that the two are engaged.

Jeter won’t confirm those reports, which should come as no surprise to those who have tracked Jeter’s off-field life.

Although he’s been linked to stars like Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba and Mariah Carey, Jeter was mum to the New York media on those relationships, too.

Clearly, his personal life has no impact on his baseball performance. Jeter is just the 28th player in Major League history to reach the hallowed 3,000 hit milestone.

Read More

yao ming, wnba, fiba u19 latvia, fivb : Yao Ming retires: Round table discussion

Matt Moore: Is Yao Ming a Hall of Famer?

I'm leaning towards no. He only had two 20-10 seasons where he played over 60 games. There's the Chinese cultural impact and the fact that he was the best center in the league from 2006-2009. But other than that, I'm having a hard time justifying his entry to the Hall.

Ben Golliver: Definitely not based on his NBA record. Didn't play enough games, win enough playoff series, take home enough individual hardware or influence the game's development. But he will get in like Arvydas Sabonis did on the international side for sure. And more than deservedly so. He was a pivotal factor in both the game's spreading influence into China and China's growing interest in the game.

Royce Young: I'm with Ben. There's no denying the impact he made and how important of a player he was to expanding the NBA's global brand, but in terms of what he did on the floor, I don't think so. His 2006-07 season was outstanding, but a lot of players have had really nice isolated seasons here and there.

No doubt he'd be one if injuries hadn't sidelined him, but that's part of it and the reality is, he just didn't play enough.

But in terms of an international Hall of Famer, absolutely. In terms of an NBA one, he simply didn't play enough. I don't think there's a special exception just because someone had a cultural impact (I mean, he's not exactly Jackie Robinson here). It's about what you did and didn't do on the court.

Matt Moore: Let's say he'd stayed healthy. What would his career ceiling have been?

Ben Golliver: Exactly halfway between Mark Eaton and Shaquille O'Neal.

Royce Young: He played in eight seasons and at his size, I don't really think he would've played more than one or two more anyway. He just would've had really nice numbers. He finished with what, 19-9 for his career? I bet he would've been like 22-10 and been, along with Shaq, one of the most dominant players in the league for a decade. Surefire Hall of Famer if he had stayed healthy.

Matt Moore: If Yao had stayed healthy, would we consider Dwight Howard's career differently? I can see making the argument for Yao being better than Dwight all the way until 2009, which slightly impacts Dwight's overall impressiveness.

Ben Golliver: I think Yao, unfortunately, will always be an overlooked oddity when we talk about the history of big men. Because of his outsider status and unprecedented size/skill set, Yao had Dirk Nowitzki's predicament of needing to win a title to justify (and explain) himself, only taken to a whole new level.

I just don't think he ever would inch his way into the American lineage without a ring or an MVP award (or two). It's just way too easy for history to trace from Abdul-Jabbar to Olajuwon (who gets a pass because he played for a high-profile college here in the States and went on to win rings) to Robinson to O'Neal to Howard. I'm not saying that's fair or how it should be, but I think that's his lot in life even if he had been healthier and 10%+ more productive.

Royce Young: There is an almost irrational thing about if a big man is truly good, he'll lead you to a title. But that's obviously not true. Patrick Ewing taught us that.

I really think if Yao had been fully healthy for 10 straight seasons, he'd have an MVP. Maybe not a title, but he'd have been one of the five scariest matchups night-to-night in the league.

Ben Golliver: Ewing is a great example because I just totally left him out of the lineage (because he didn't win a title when multiple people playing concurrently did?). He's the extraneous one in the Olajuwon/Robinson/Ewing trio, right? And he even had the biggest market team, plenty of deep playoff exposure and a high-profile American college to his advantage, which Yao didn't. Once a dominant center leads a team to a title post-Shaq, I think Yao is even more doomed.

If we're looking to spin a resolution somewhat positively, I think it's best to remember Yao as one of a kind than as one in a line. Read More
