ICICI Lombard ups diesel car insurance premium | ICICI Lombard

If you are driving a diesel car, you may now have to shell out more as insurance premium. ICICI Lombard, for one, has already drawn up plans to put an average of 15 per cent overloading while calculating insurance premium on diesel vehicles.

And that’s not all. The company is also mulling to factor in some new parameters like age of the driver, variant of the vehicle, while calculating the insurance premium.

“In motor insurance, the premium calculation revolves around two to three parameters, like the model of the vehicle and location where it is heading (that is where the vehicle is in use). The age of the vehicle has also been included recently but if one goes by the experience and practice in the western countries, the drivers’ characteristics are also taken into consideration, which is not done here. Fuel type, for instance is an important factor, which determines the risk. Diesel cars are mostly used for commercial purposes and exposure to risk is higher for such vehicles. Therefore this 15 per cent overloading, depending on the fuel type is not unjustified,” said Amitabh Jain, vice-president & head-motor insurance, ICICI Lombard.

Going forward, the general insurance company will also create a comprehensive database on the demographic behavious and fuel type of the vehicle while revising the premium amounts in case of motor insurance.

“We know such detailing will take some time. But we are consciously and carefully working on that. These data will have to be captured and analysed,” said Jain.

Responding to queries on the committee formed for the amendment of Motor Vehicle Act, Sanjay Datta, head-customer service (health and motor), ICICI Lombard, said they were optimistic over getting the motor vehicle third-party liability limit capped at Rs 10,00,000 as recommended by the Sundar Committe. At present the motor vehicle liability is unlimited while the aircraft liability is capped at Rs 5,00,000 and railway liability at Rs 2,00,000. Read More

Toyota Liva Price in India - Launch Flurry + Slowdown = Price War Looms in Motown

A price war seems imminent in passenger cars, with a raft of launches due in the next few weeks amid a deepening slowdown in Motown. There are three major launches in the next fortnight: Toyota’s first hatchback in India called Liva, Ford’s new Fiesta sedan and the Chevy Beat diesel variant.

Pramod Kumar and Himanshu Sharma, analysts with broking house JM Financial, believe this puts Maruti Suzuki on notice. Two of the three launches are in the hatchback segment, the dominion of India’s No. 1 carmaker. And the Beat diesel will come with a 24 kmpl fuel efficiency, positioning itself as perhaps the cheapest in the segment excepting Tata Indica.

Vikas Khemani and Nischal Maheshwari of brokerage Edelweiss Securities concur.

Apart from macro headwinds, they said in a note, Maruti would find it tough to clock healthy volumes against a robust pipeline of launches this fiscal. “Though the price of Liva is not yet known, according to Toyota, it would be competitive, offering good value for money. In our view, it should match Maruti Swift in price (Rs4.1 lakh ex-showroom Delhi),” Khemani and Maheshwari said.

“GM may price the diesel version of the Beat very aggressively to revive the brand and in the process, make the car the benchmark entry-level diesel. We expect pricing to start at Rs4.2 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi,” said Kumar and Sharma in their note to clients.

Whichever way you look, automakers said, the headwinds are getting stronger. Growth in car sales is already tapering and year-on-year growth has fallen from 30% in January to just 7% in May, points out Neeraj Garg, director (member of board) of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Division. “Indications are June will be even lower than May. The sentiment is subdued and the fuel price increase is unlikely to improve matters,” Garg said.

To boot, launches have also helped new entrants garner substantial sales volumes — the reason why analysts say the signal has turned amber for Maruti. The last four hatchback launches — Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo, Chevy Beat (petrol) and Nissan Micra — have quickly cornered 18% of segment volumes, Kumar and Sharma said, which indicates many customers easily shift away from well-entrenched brands. The new Ford Fiesta, which promises to liven up the sedans segment with a rash of new features, is expected to offer a class-busting mileage of over 23 kmpl for the diesel version.

Mahantesh Sabarad, senior vice president - equity research, at Fortune Broking said aggressive pricing will certainly hurt dominant players like Maruti and Hyundai. Read More

Revealed: 2011 Ford Mustang | Ford Mustang Latest Model

It would be reasonable to expect that Ford might pass over the Mustang and instead devote more attention to its other models since it's fresh off a comprehensive revamp for the 2010 model year. However, that's not what is shaping up in the House That Henry Built.

For 2011, the Blue Oval is introducing a new 3.7-liter V6 Mustang that should give it the firepower and refinement needed to take on Chevrolet's six-cylinder Camaro and Hyundai's upstart Genesis Coupe. But it isn't just the spanking all-aluminum powerplant and its 305 horsepower and 280 foot-pounds of torque that's making the scene for the forthcoming model year. In addition to the Cleveland-sourced mill, there are a pair of fresh gearboxes, a new V6 performance package, and a host of nip/tucks to the interior and elsewhere.

Now, we could grouse on behalf of 2010 MY 'Stang owners everywhere that these upgrades weren't part of last year's mid-life updo, but instead, we'll just be happy that these advancements are arriving at all.

Despite being smaller than the outgoing 4.0-liter V6, the dual-overhead cam 3.7-liter's horsepower and torque ratings represent massive improvements over the 2010 model (305 HP dismisses 210 HP and 280 lb-ft. plays 240 torques). In fact, that's more horsepower than the 4.6-liter V8 Mustang made just a few years ago. While the 305-horse figure only allows the Mustang to pip the crosstown Camaro by a single all-important stallion in the pony car bragging wars, Ford says the powertrain will be good for 30 miles-per-gallon on the highway when paired with its new six-speed automatic, also one notch better than the Chevy.

Germany Car Parking Lot - Amazing Photos

The facility shown in the photographs is not a public parking garage. It is a storage facility for new Volkswagen vehicles located at the Autostadt, in Wolfsburg, Germany. The Autostadt is a sprawling complex operated by the Volkswagen Group that comprises a variety of attractions, tours and restaurants along with facilities aimed at customers who have arrived to collect a newly purchased vehicle. Part of the new car collection procedure involves the retrieval of the vehicle from the “CarTower” shown in the above photographs.

The next steps in the procedure are automatic: a lift in one of the CarTowers selects the correct vehicle and conveys it to the centre of the tower from where it is gently lowered to the ground floor. Thereafter the new car rolls through a tunnel into the Car Distribution Centre.

German Parking Lot

Two 160-foot circular towers store 400 new cars on 20 levels, serviced by a central elevator that can retrieve a car in 30 seconds. Stacking cars in close-packed racks can be up to 50 percent more efficient than a conventional garage.

Unsold Cars Due To Global Recession - Rare Photos Collection

Sales of new cars in the UK have slumped to a 12-year-low and production of cars at Honda in Swindon has been halted for a unprecedented four-month period because of the collapse in global sales and represents the longest continuous halt in production at any UK car plant. The announcement comes on a day when the EU’s Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen warned the outlook for the European car industry was ‘brutal’ and predicted not all European manufacturers would survive the crisis.
