DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West heads back to the Pacific Northwest this week, to a track that was an annual stop on the circuit for decades.
The Evergreen 200 at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Wash., on Sunday, July 10 marks a return to the .646-mile track that hosted 50 series races between 1964 and 2008.
/files/evergreen_speedway_logo.jpgNine of those events, between 1985 and 1993, were the legendary 500-lap races that attracted many of NASCAR’s major stars. Bill Elliott raced in eight of them, winning in 1987 and finishing second in 1986 and 1990. Series regulars at the time included Washington natives Chad Little, who won in 1986, 1988 and 1989; and Derrike Cope, who won in 1985.
This year’s visit by the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West is slated to kick off with a block party on the streets of Monroe on Friday. The series hits the track, meanwhile, on Saturday, July 9, with two practice sessions in the afternoon and qualifying slated for 6 p.m. A driver autograph session is planned for 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, with the race slated to get underway at 3:15 p.m.
“We’re excited about the return of the series to Evergreen Speedway,” said veteran car owner Bill McAnally. “The racing there was always very close, with plenty of tough competition. And they always had a big turnout, with some of the greatest fans in NASCAR.”
Bill McAnally Racing registered four wins at Evergreen Speedway, including back-to-back victories by Brendan Gaughan in 2000 and 2001. BMR’s Eric Holmes, a three-time series champion, finished second when the series last visited the fairgrounds track in Monroe in 2008.
