Agassiz speedway played host to the old time Racers Association on saturday night. The evening was full of great finishes and smoke shows.

In  the Late model Sportsmans, Geordie Glenn in the 9 and Dean Bridge in the 6 led the field to the green. Glenn would lead the first couple laps but would be passed on lap three by quick time Dave Hemrich. Hemrich would be followed by the 58 of Bob Kuhn.  On lap 9 4th place running John Ross would head to the pits after his left rear tire went flat, He would return to the race several laps down though. On lap 12 Kuhn got loose while pressuring the 33 this gave Hemrich the chance to pull away and claim the victory. On the final lap heat race winner Larry Sproule and Glenn got together going into turn one. No harm was done and both drivers where able to finish the race. Hemrich would start the nights smoke shows with some doughnuts on the back stretch.

In the OTRAs' main event the 03 of Dennis Morno took the early lead from the pole. the 43 of Dean Gill and the 1 of James Campbell showed early that they both wanted the win. moving into 2nd and 3rd. The yellow came out early on lap 6 when the 24 of Roger Beck would loose the driveshaft in turn three, ending his night. After the restart Morno would hold the lead but was being pressured hard by Gill and Campbell. On lap 19 the 03 would get loose in three the 1 who had been right on his bumper would check up allowing the 43 of Gill and the 22 of Larry Joyce to get by on the high side. Morno would fall back to 5th spot. Campbell would battle hard until on lap 27 when his motor would explode ending his night, setting up a six lap shoot out and giving the fans the 2nd smoke show of the night. On the restart Joyce would push Gill high and make the pass and the eventual win.

Twenty hornets would make the call for there main event, Jessie Bridge and Matt Ostermeier started on the front row Bridge would lead early until on lap 8 when regular mini stock driver Wayne Goodwin would take the lead. Last years champion Billy Bell and Dalton Kuhn where making a steady climb through the field showing the crowd that they would be  a force to be reckon with this evening. the 58 of Kuhns night came close to being over when he got sideways on the front stretch, Kuhn would hold on to the car and continue to make a charge to the front.  The first yellow would come out on lap 22 when Alex Thornley in the 49 would turn the 15 of Liam Bell, Bell would do a full 360 and would reconnect with the 49 turning him sideways as well. On the restart the 49 would head to the pits ending his night, shortly after the 19 of Darren Barrett would spin in one. He would get straightened out and the race would go on. With ten laps to go the 58, who had been running third, would go up in smoke on the front stretch ending his night. Goodwin would get a good re-start and hold on for the win over Billy Bell.

The final event of the evening was the hit 2 pass. The heavy hitting started early with a massive pill-up in turn one involving 5 cars . other big hits in the race where when the 55 went head first into the wall. Shortly after the 88 and 08 also found themselves in the outside wall. In the end the 124 would be declared the winner.

The next event at Agassiz speedway will be on July 23

Next Saturday night, July 16, the ASA BC Late models will be in town for the Thrifty Foods 150 lap race, with no pit stops. In years past, this series was known as the Katana Sportsman series, but over the offseason, the ownership was sold to John Ross, who races the #2 late model. The series then decided to join up with the American Speed Association, an organization based out of Florida. All of the rules have stayed the same from previous years, but the racing has developed tremendously. #86 Tom Berrow who won the series last season, holds onto the points lead after 1 race event, holding a 6 point lead over #52 Geoff Morris. The Island stock cars and the Bomber cars will fill out the racing card next weekend. The Monster trucks will be returning on July 30, and 31st, bringing 4 monster trucks with them. This night also marks the mid-season championship for the Hornet cars, and the Bomber cars. these are two great events that you don’t want to miss.

TOP 5 FOR HARR AT EVERGREEN

Pursley celebrates winning the Evergreen 200 for his sixth NASCAR K&N Pro Series West victory of the season at Evergreen Speedway.

Pursley Finds A Way

Picks up sixth NASCAR K&N Pro Series West win of the season
Tim Southers, NASCAR
MONROE, Wash. – The remarkable season continues for Greg Pursley.
Pursley rebounded from having to make a pit stop for a flat tire while leading early in the Evergreen 200 at Evergreen Speedway and was able to pass his teammate Dylan Kwasniewski with a dozen laps remaining and hold on to win his sixth NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race of the season.
Kwasniewski finished second, with Moses Smith third and Eric Holmes fourth. Daryl Harr completed the top five in the first NASCAR K&N Pro Series West event at the track since 2008.
The first yellow of the race was thrown on Lap 59 for debris. Pursley stopped during that caution and restarted 11th when the race went back to green on Lap 65. Pursley, who now has a commanding 298-point lead in the championship standings, moved up to fifth by the halfway break and moved up through the top five until he passed Holmes for second on Lap 106.
Kwasniewski inherited the lead from Pursley on Lap 62 and set the pace, leading a race-high 125 laps. Pursley led two laps while the pair ran side by side, but his 16-year-old teammate prevailed initially. On a Lap 188 restart, following the fifth and final caution, Kwasniewski missed a shift and Pursley charged to the outside to take lead for good. Kwasniewski's runner-up showing is his second of the year, with his first coming on his hometrack at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in June.
Justin Philpott was sixth with local driver Naima Lang, making his series debut, finishing seventh after winning the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 100-lap event prior to the Evergreen 200.
Another local favorite, Jeff Barkshire, was eighth with Luis Martinez Jr. ninth and another local driver Jason Fraser 10th.
The Evergreen 200 will air on SPEED on Thursday, July 28 at 6 p.m. ET.
The next event on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West schedule is the Bi-Mart Salute to the Troops 125 at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway on Sunday, July 24.

Fireworks Dominate Western Speedway Program

By Ken Keating

Western Speedway hosted the Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Figure 8s, and the Bomber Series this evening and the fireworks began in the Trophy Dashes and ended with a big fireworks show put on by Celebration Fireworks. This was designated as Mascot Night and several Mascots joined the festivities including Aaron the Lucky Dog, Grizz from the Victoria Grizzlies, Daisy the Cow and Miss Vicky from Island Farms, Rocky the Raccoon from the Shamrocks, and Marty the Marmot from the new Victoria Royals in the Western Hockey League. All of the Mascots took part in a relay race with several kids from the stands and Marty even took over Rod Tytgat's job and flagged a race. This part of the program was sponsored by Galaxie Motors while Wilson's Transportation sponsored the first ever school bus race held at the Speedway and the fireworks show.

Mike Melin got the fireworks going on the track in his first Bomber Series race as he went to go inside of Tyler Woods and Daniel David for the lead and got into Woods a bit. Woods spun out while the rest of the field carried on with Melin catching David and as he again dove to the inside for the lead spun himself out and just missed taking David with him and this is the first Trophy Dash of the night. David was the winner. Other Dash winners included Tyler Clough in the Demo Car Series, Richard Milne in the Demo Truck Series, and Dan Baluch in the Figure 8 Series. Heat race winners were Richard Milne, Trucks, Ashton Campbell and Chris Romkey, Figure 8 Series; Greg Sagmoen, Demo Cars; while Aaron Camron and Mark Lockhart took the wins in the Bomber Series.
Jacob Burns and Blaine Duperrault shared the front row for forty laps of racing in the Figure 8 Feature event but Sean Welch grabbed the lead on the first lap and held it until Cam Wilkinson went by him on lap four. This race saw a lot of heavy hits and lead changes between Wilkinson and Ashton Campbell over the next several laps. Marie Haywood moved into contention and traded second spot back and forth with Campbell and Wilkinson for several laps as well. On lap ten Wilkinson took sole possesion of first place while Haywood remained in second followed by Campbell in a tight bunch. On lap twenty, Campbell again went by Haywood and took the second spot while Wilkinson remained in the lead. On lap twenty-eight, Campbell passed for the lead dropping Wilkinson back to second. When the dust settled Campbell took the win followed by Wilkinson, Haywood, Kyle Rizok, and Duperrault rounding out the top five.

Tyler Woods and Daniel David led seventeen cars to the green flag in the Bomber Series Feature event scheduled for forty laps. Mark Lockhart, racing for the first time in several years, took the early lead followed quickly by Brandon Carlson driving the #88 car. Meanwhile behind them, Heath Cooper and Brandon Steen were making their way forward in a hurry and took the third and forth spot respectively on lap seven setting up a great four car battle for the next thirty plus laps. Lap after lap these four drivers ran bumper to bumper until Carlson went to the outside in a bid to pass Lockhart on lap twenty-one. He slid a bit to wide and allowed Cooper and Steen to go by for second and third but never gave up staying right on the bumper of Steen's car. Steen then took his turn running side by side with Cooper for several laps trying to take the second spot. On lap twenty-six, Steen finally got by Cooper and Carlson also made the pass and into third as Cooper dropped off the pace and went to the pits on lap twenty-eight. Steen moved to the outside of Lockhart and they ran side by side for several laps with Carlson still in the mix running third. Lapped traffic played a part as Steen had to back off and dropped back to second but still in striking distance. Again Steen moved to the outside of Lockhart and again ran into lapped traffic only this time Steen used the slower car as a pick and got a bit of an advantage on lap thirty-eight but Lockhart stayed with him. When the chequered flag dropped, Steen took the win followed by Lockhart, Carlson, Chris Stone, and Aaron Camron rounding out the top five in one of the better Bomber races of the year so far.

Adam Detlor had the pole for the start of the Demo Truck Feature event with Dustin Dash on the outside. Dash lost an axle on the first lap bringing out the yellow flag. On the restart, Kevin Knight jumped into the lead followed by Richard Milne, looking for the claen sweep. The fast trucks each took a turn at taking out slower traffic as Knight took out Rory Smith driving the #14 truck and George Haywood put a big hit on Detlor. Knight kept the field behind him as he won the Demo Truck Feature for the fourth time followed by Milne and Haywood rounding out the top three after twenty laps of hard hitting action.
Ten cars took the green flag in the Demo Car Series but most didn't last the first lap that included Smokin Joe Liberatore as his car suffered a broken axle, Tyler Clough was also a victim of a crash into the third turn wall. Troy Tarbuck led from lap one until he was overtaken by Greg Sagmoen on lap nine. Sagmoen first had to get by Noel Durand running second and did so three laps earlier. When the chequered flag dropped Sagmoen had the win followed by Tarbuck and Bryce Muir the top three in another hard hitting race.
Four school buses driven by B.J. Veld, Kevin Knight, Andrew Wilson, and George Haywood lined up for racing that was supposed to be a clean race. Wilson got the early lead while Knight was using the outside and coming forward in a hurry. Knight caught the leader and spun him around and took over the lead. Wilson got his bus going in the right direction and put a hit into Knight to retaliate. B.J. and Haywood got into each other as well but Knight went on for the win followed by Haywood, B.J. Veld, and Andrew Wilson. When asked Knight said, "I just left the Demo Truck Feature and I couldn't resist putting a hit on Wilson". All the drivers enjoyed running this event, Haywood was ready to go more laps, and the big crowd enjoyed it as well. Celebration Fireworks closed the event by satging one of the best fireworks show seen at the Speedway much to the delight of the fans.

The next event is scheduled for July 13th with the return of the Steve Copp Construction sponsored Hornet Series racing on the tight inside oval. The next regular racing is two nights of Cast Iron Nationals with the Sprint Car Series, the WilRoc Lites, and the Dwarf Car Series beginning on Friday night, July fifteenth and ending on Saturday July sixteenth with the same Series running.

TOUGH BREAK FOR JASON WHITE IN A & W DODGE

By Todd Lewis & TL Sports & Entertainment

Photo: Gary Grant
Sun Peaks, British Columbia racer Jason White was hungry for more success in round number five of the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.  White had reeled off three consecutive top ten finishes, including a career best sixth place result in his #21 A & W Dodge Challenger and was looking forward to racing on the streets of Toronto during the Indy weekend.  Unfortunately that consecutive string came to an end.

It was a difficult start to the race weekend in practice when during the Friday afternoon practice session White had issues with the drive shaft in the #21 A & W Dodge.  “It was a mechanical failure” explained White.  “It’s unfortunate that it happens and it cost us a lot of practice time on this track” he added.

The #21 A & W Dodge team went to work to complete repairs before the qualifying session later that day.  “As usual the guys did a great job getting the car ready for qualifying, unfortunately we had to go in the first group so the track wasn’t as good as it would be later on” said White.

White would start the 100km feature event from the eighteenth spot and had a plan to secure a solid finish in the race.  “This track is extremely hard on equipment so I knew there would be guys that wouldn’t finish the race so I wanted to be smart, take it easy and gain as many positions as possible” he stated.

Throughout the race White executed his plan for the #21 A & W Dodge perfectly.  “The car felt really good and I was able to move up a few spots early and then settled in” explained White.  “We were having a really good run and I was just outside the top ten as the laps were starting to wind down”.

The BC racers good fortune would come to end however.  With only a few laps remaining the #21 A & W Dodge rolled to a stop.   “It’s a shame” said White afterwards.  “We had another really good run going and it looks like we broke a rear gear.  Again, it’s a mechanical failure, but it’s too bad for the whole team that worked so hard” he added.

The #21 A & W Dodge team gets back in action next at White’s home track, Motoplex Speedway near Vernon, BC on Saturday July 23rd.  “We’re excited to get back to the ovals, especially that one” said White.  “We’ll be doing a lot of appearances and work with A & W and I know we’ll have a lot of hometown support at the race” he added.

Race fans will have even more opportunities to follow Jason White and the #21 A & W Dodge Challenger team this season. Check out the all new team website at www.jasonwhiteracing.com and be sure to follow Jason on twitter for the latest updates @racinjasonwhite  The 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will consist of twelve events from coast to coast in Canada.

AMAZING RACING AND FIREWORKS AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY

By Kelly Hart

On Midseason Championship Night at ASA member track Skagit Speedway an overflow crowd viewed one hotly contested event after another. When the racing program ended a 25 minute monster fireworks display wowed the crowd.

All four divisions started the night with 8 car scrambles featuring the top eight in car owners points battling for starting positions in the main events. Travis Jacobson won both the 410 and 360 sprint scrambles in the potent twin #18 cars of Shaylen Raye Motorsports in convincing fashion. Derek Roberts won the Sportsman Sprint scramble with Freddy Vela capturing the Outlaw Hornet scramble win.

With Jacobson taking command of the early laps of the 410 Sprint main there were changes happening behind him. Colton Heath who started 8th in the scramble and finished fifth used that starting position to move quickly into 3rd position and set sight on the leaders. A lap 11 caution for a spinning 4th place car of Barry Martinez bunched the field. Heath used that restart to get around point leader Jesse Whitney and set sail for Jacobson. Nearing lap 20 the two encountered traffic with Jacobson choosing one line to get around the lapper and Heath the other. Heath passed Jacobson on lap 21 and was never headed the rest of the way. For Heath is was his first win in the LAW Motorsports car that has two Dirt Cup victories under it's belt. At the line it was Heath, Jacobson, Whitney, Josh DeWitt and Eric Fisher the top 5.

For Jacobson a great night quickly went south as he was leading the Budweiser 360 Sprint main when a fuel pump quit five laps into the race ending the teams bid for a win. In a race that seemed as if no one wanted to win Devin Madonia inherited the lead and 5 laps later had a fuel line come lose ending his night. Inherit the lead Alan Munn. Munn would hold onto the lead for two laps before hard charging Mack Brown came sliding up underneath coming out of turn 4 to take over the lead on the 13th lap. Brown was fighting an ill handling race car and hanging on for dear life with the right front appearing to be broken. The top five were Brown, Munn, Kelsey Carpenter, Rod Perkins and Bud Ashe in his best run in a few years.

In just a few short weeks back in a race car after a couple of years off Brandon Harkness has piloted the Steve Parker Sportsman Sprint car to two victories. Harkness led all 20 laps of the midseason race for the win. His second in three weeks of racing. Rounding out the top 5 were Justin Youngquist, Derek Roberts, James Bundy and Paul Burdick. Harkness made contact with the turn one wall late in the race allowing Youngquist to close on the last few laps. Youngquist made one last attempt on the final lap to pull even but Harkness drove a smooth and fast outside line to take the win.

For Outlaw Hornet points leader Freddy Vela, winners circle is becoming almost like a second home. Vela won his 4th main of the year extending his point lead in convincing fashion leading all 17 laps. Matt Powers, Rick Young, Matt Ploeg and Tyler Ketchum rounded out the top 5.

When the night of racing had ended Skagit Speedway treated the capacity crowd to one of the most ambitious fireworks displays in track history. The NW Les Schwab Tire Center Giant Firework Show went on for over 20 minutes and ended with a cascade of lights and booms that left the crowd gasping in awe and standing on their feet.

Saturday night July 16th Skagit Speedway hosts the Big Rig Truck Race presented by Classic Rock 92.9 FM KISM. Also scheduled are Sprint cars and Outlaw Hornets.
