Facebook breaks up with Breakup Notifier after 3.6 million (!) users Posted: 23 Feb 2011 02:19 PM PST Last week, we mentioned Breakup Notifier, a Facebook-related service that allowed users to register and then receive updates when someone they’re obsessed with attracted to ended whatever relationship they’re in. That service has been shut down by Facebook. Because they got 3.6 million users in the span of about seven days. In the grand scheme of things, that’s actually a fairly small percentage of people who use Facebook. However, it’s an incredibly large amount of folks that would like to immediately know — via email or however — when someone becomes single, even if by doing so they violate their privacy. Speaking of violation of privacy, Facebook didn’t cite that when they shut down the service. Instead, they let developer Dan Loewenherz know, via TechCrunch, that they were crushing his hopes and dreams because of an API call.
Of course, API calls don’t exactly justify the need to remove Dan’s personal Facebook account. If you check out Dan’s Twitter feed — or the Breakup Notifier Twitter feed — you’ll notice that they’d love to get things up and running again, but haven’t had much success as of yet, due to Facebook stonewalling them. Perhaps he should try stalking? |
VIDEO: Man tries to run through glass; fails miserably Posted: 23 Feb 2011 02:16 PM PST Perhaps I’m missing something from this clip or maybe I’m just not smart enough to figure out why a man dressed in football pads is trying to run through glass. The problem? He isn’t really running as opposed to butting the helmet against the glass repeatedly. Not surprisingly, he was only able to break one pane, although, he does have a legitimate gripe. The glass standards in China are far more stringent than the ones in his native New Zealand. Man wearing football helmet hilariously fails to run through glass [Shutdown Corner] |
Essential Man skills – Shoe care Posted: 23 Feb 2011 01:30 PM PST Every man needs to know how to take care of his things. Especially when you’re spending mad bills, you want to make sure your purchases last. Here’s a few tips on how to make sure your shoes stand the test of time.
These are essential for keeping the shape of your shoe and fighting off the stank. If you can, opt for the unfinished cedar wood shoe trees with the split toe. These will ensure the closest fit between your shoe the tree. You don’t need tons of shoe trees, as you really just need to utilize them within one to two hours after removal. Past that time, and the shoes will have already returned to their natural shape. Rochester Men’s Shoe Trees – $24.95 Shine Kit You’ve put in all this effort to make sure your shoe doesn’t lose it’s shape, you better make sure it’s as shiny my great uncle’s bald head. To do that, invest in a shine kit. Here’s what you need – Shoe wax (I’ve been using Kiwi since I can remember. My Dad always did, too.), a welt brush (looks like a tooth brush, which you can use instead), polishing cloth, polishing brush, and sole dressing. Kiwi Shoe Shine Valet – $40.99 General Tips 1. If your shoe is wet, stuff newspapers, or other outdated print media, into your shoes. Before they’re completely dry, remove the paper and shove the shoe trees inside. This way they’ll dry more thoroughly and maintain their shape. 2. For salt stains, a little vinegar and water (not a lot) should do the trick. 3. Find a cobbler you trust and use him for any and all repairs. Have him (or her) resole or reheel your shoes before it’s too late. Better to repair those things before it gets too late. 4. Try not to wear the same shoes 2 or 3 days in a row. Giving them ample rest and allowing the shoe to air out, will reduce odor and decrease the risk of wearing out the sole/heels too soon. |
Study: Five burgers a week could leave you with cancer Posted: 23 Feb 2011 01:26 PM PST Most guys out there are like me, I’d assume, and are always ready to eat a burger. You may not go out of the way to do it everyday, but if one just materialized in front of you, who wouldn’t eat it? Bad news: A new study out of the UK says five burgers a week may leave you with cancer. According to AOL News, Americans (and Canadians) tend to eat between 100 and 150 hamburgers each year on average, which would mean that a significant percentage of the population could be at risk. Fortunately, there are some disputes of this study; the British Nutrition Foundation released data saying that most people eat a “healthy” amount of red meat and that links between the food and cancer were “inconclusive at best.” So, I guess the important thing to take away from all this is that you should probably not eat any burgers. Or eat lots of burgers? Or continue eating the exact same amount of burgers, but occasionally do a headstand to keep the red meat from infecting you? I don’t really know. I’m no meatologist. All I know is that this would be fitting karmic retribution for “Popeye” character Wimpy and his shittiness regarding timely hamburger payment.
